Constructing a global cross-linguistic database of basic phonological properties: Principles and challenges
نویسنده
چکیده
There is an obvious interest in capturing general trends in the structure of phonological systems of the world’s extant languages. These may hint at overall design properties of human language, which in turn may have origins in basic human cognitive properties or characteristics inherited from the earliest human language(s). One tool that can be used to study such trends is a broadly-based crosslinguistic database on phonological systems. Four of the principal challenges to providing this will be discussed in this paper, which describes the thinking behind the compilation of the LAPSyD database and draws some comparisons with other somewhat similar projects, such as PHOIBLE, SAPhon and Segérer’s African consonant inventory database.

Cross-Linguistic Transfer Revisited: The Case of English and Persian
The present study sought to investigate the evidence for cross-linguistic transfer in a partial English immersion and non-immersion educational setting. To this end, a total of 145 first, third and fifth graders in a partial English immersion program and 95 students from the same grade levels in a non-immersion program were chosen. Six different English and Persian tests were administered: the ...

متن کاملCLEARPOND: Cross-Linguistic Easy-Access Resource for Phonological and Orthographic Neighborhood Densities
Past research has demonstrated cross-linguistic, cross-modal, and task-dependent differences in neighborhood density effects, indicating a need to control for neighborhood variables when developing and interpreting research on language processing. The goals of the present paper are two-fold: (1) to introduce CLEARPOND (Cross-Linguistic Easy-Access Resource for Phonological and Orthographic Neig...

متن کاملCommentary: “An Evaluation of Universal Grammar and the Phonological Mind”—UG Is Still a Viable Hypothesis
Everett (2016b) criticizes The Phonological Mind thesis (Berent, 2013a,b) on logical, methodological and empirical grounds. Most of Everett's concerns are directed toward the hypothesis that the phonological grammar is constrained by universal grammatical (UG) principles. Contrary to Everett's logical challenges, here I show that the UG hypothesis is readily falsifiable, that universality is no...
